The current rugby program at La Costa Canyon High School began in the fall of 2012, so our first season was the winter 2012-2013 season.

2012-2013

Three LCC students, Tanner Taguchi, Sawyer Kilgore and Patrick French, wanted to play rugby for their high school and formed a school club whose purpose was to play rugby.  They asked for administrative and coaching assistance from a recreational youth rugby club, the Coastal Dragons.  The three first coaches and administrators who were instrumental in the formation of the team were Nick Duvall, Dave Cobb, and Michael French.  The team formed under a start-up/developmental team league in SoCal Youth Rugby and was comprised of 23 dedicated student athletes.  We fielded just one team, a combined team, from Freshmen to Senior, and came in third place in the league.

2013-2014

This season, we separated completely from the Coastal Dragons and we had 38 dedicated student athletes, moved up a division, and fielded both a Varsity and a Junior Varsity team.  The Varsity side finished second in the league and our Junior Varsity won the league. Part way through the season, we were able to come 100% under the umbrella of the Maverick Athletic Boosters, the same as all other sports at LCC.  Our coaches, managers, and administrators are now all LCC/SDUHSD volunteer employees, similar to other sports at LCC.

2014-2015

This season found us with 60 student athletes signing up and about 50 student athletes playing at least one game. We fielded a Varsity and Junior Varsity sides, and moved up to the top tier, or Red Division. The Red Division is the most difficult Division for a HS rugby team in SoCal to access at the moment, requiring 100% of all players from one school, and is noted for its' adherence (to the maximum extent possible) to CIF guidelines and principles. Though we were competitive at the Varsity level, our opponents were some of the best teams in SoCal, and we finished the season with a 3-3 record. Our JV team was very strong and swept the league at 6-0.

2015-2016

It was a great season. We started a Girls Team!  We had 21 girls show up at the pitch and play during this inaugural season. Our lady ruggers played sevens in the Green Division, and did very well.

Four years ago, one of the founding players of the team put a challenge on the website "Striving to become SoCal High School Champions".  This past season our Varsity boys accomplished that, finishing with a 10 - 0 record, winning the SoCal Red Division Championship.  We played very determined,  able, and worthy opponents and thank them for the competition.

2016-2017

We hope to continue with a great program of student athletes, parents and supporters. We'll be fielding a V and JV side of 15s for boys and expect to field a V and JV side of 7s for our girls.....!   Our underlying, fundamental goal is to see rugby as an official school sport, sanctioned by the California Interscholastic Federation.
